Background of the Study
Stature estimation from skeletal remains is a critical component of forensic anthropology, aiding in the reconstruction of physical profiles for unidentified individuals. In Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, Edo State, researchers utilize long bone measurements and regression formulas to approximate stature with significant implications for victim identification and legal investigations (Olabisi, 2023). Despite methodological advances, variations in population-specific growth patterns and skeletal preservation challenge the accuracy of these estimations (Akinola, 2024). This study examines the application of standard anthropometric techniques in a local context, highlighting the interplay between genetic, nutritional, and environmental influences on skeletal growth. By integrating modern imaging technology and statistical modeling, the research aims to refine stature estimation methods. Furthermore, it evaluates the consistency of current forensic practices and proposes adjustments to ensure more reliable outcomes in legal proceedings, thereby enhancing the overall credibility of forensic anthropological assessments (Adebanjo, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Current forensic methods in Ikpoba-Okha face challenges in accurately determining stature from skeletal remains due to population-specific variations and inconsistent measurement techniques. These challenges lead to errors in victim identification and forensic reconstructions (Folorunsho, 2023). The lack of updated regional data and standardized protocols further exacerbates these issues, undermining the reliability of stature estimation in legal contexts. This study seeks to identify and address these methodological shortcomings to improve forensic accuracy (Balogun, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate current stature estimation methods in Ikpoba-Okha.

  2. To assess the impact of regional growth variations on measurement accuracy.

  3. To propose refined protocols incorporating modern techniques.

Research Questions:

  1. What are the standard methods used for stature estimation from skeletal remains?

  2. How do regional factors affect the accuracy of these methods?

  3. What protocol adjustments can enhance measurement reliability?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. H₁: Incorporating modern imaging technology improves stature estimation accuracy.

  2. H₂: Regional growth variations significantly affect forensic measurements.

  3. H₃: Standardized protocols lead to more consistent forensic outcomes.

Significance of the Study
This study will provide crucial insights into improving forensic stature estimation in Ikpoba-Okha, thereby enhancing victim identification and legal accuracy. The findings are expected to support methodological refinements and inform policy development, contributing to stronger forensic practices and improved judicial outcomes (Ogunyemi, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to evaluating forensic stature estimation methods in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, focusing solely on skeletal measurement techniques and regional growth factors.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Stature Estimation: The process of approximating an individual’s height from skeletal remains.

  2. Anthropometric Techniques: Methods used to measure human body dimensions.

  3. Regression Formulas: Statistical methods used to predict stature from bone measurements.
